Snoop Dogg has addressed the controversy surrounding recent comments he made about LGBTQ+ representation in Disney and Pixar’s 2022 animated film Lightyear.
During an appearance on the It’s Giving podcast earlier this month, the rapper shared that seeing a same-sex couple portrayed in the film caught him off guard — particularly because he was watching it with his young grandson, who began asking questions about same-sex relationships.
“I didn’t come in for this sh**. I just came to watch the goddamn movie,” Snoop recalled, explaining that he panicked when his grandson asked how one of the female characters had a child with another woman. “These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions. I don’t have the answer.”
The comments, which were perceived by many as dismissive of LGBTQ+ inclusion, sparked backlash online. Critics accused the rapper of promoting homophobic views and questioned the podcast’s editing choices for allowing the comments to go unchallenged.
Snoop Clarifies: “Teach Me How to Learn”
Following the criticism, Snoop responded in the comments section of a post by Hollywood Unlocked, offering clarification and expressing regret over his remarks.
“I was just caught off guard and had no answer for my grandsons,” he wrote.
“All my gay friends know what’s up — they’ve been calling me with love. My bad for not knowing the answers for a 6-year-old… Teach me how to learn. I’m not perfect.”
Snoop’s response suggested a willingness to listen and learn, and he acknowledged that navigating such conversations with children is something he still needs guidance on.
What Happened in Lightyear
The scene in question appears in Lightyear, a Pixar spinoff voiced by Chris Evans. The film includes a brief but notable montage showing space ranger Alisha Hawthorne, voiced by Uzo Aduba, marrying her partner Kiko and raising a child together. The scene includes Disney’s first same-sex kiss, which was initially removed from the film before being reinstated amid public outcry.
While the moment was celebrated by many as a meaningful step toward LGBTQ+ inclusion in mainstream media, it also drew criticism from more conservative viewers and was even banned in several countries.
Ongoing Debate Around Representation
Snoop’s comments and the surrounding backlash highlight the ongoing cultural debate over LGBTQ+ representation in children’s media. While many advocate for inclusive storytelling as a way to reflect real-world diversity, others express concern over how such topics are introduced to young audiences.
As more public figures weigh in, conversations around representation continue to evolve — often revealing generational gaps in understanding and comfort levels.
