Ruben Neves Refutes Rumors Linking Him To Diogo Jota’s Widow After Magazine Cover Shoed Them K*ssing

Ruben Neves, former Wolves captain and best friend of the late Diogo Jota, has strongly denied rumors of a romantic relationship with Jota’s widow, Rute Cardoso, after a Portuguese magazine published a front-page photo appearing to show the pair “kissing.”

The football world is still reeling from the tragic loss of Jota, 28, and his brother André, who died in a car accident in early July. Neves — who shared the pitch with Jota for Porto, Wolves, and Portugal — was visibly emotional at the funeral and recently paid tribute to his late friend with a new leg tattoo depicting the two embracing.

Neves, who has been married to Debora Lourenço for over a decade, has remained a steady source of support for Rute and Jota’s family since the tragedy. Jota, who is survived by three children, had married Rute just days before the crash.

Portuguese magazine TV Guia published an article on Wednesday titled “After Death: How Diogo Jota’s Widow Leans on His Best Friend” and used a cover image of Neves and Rute that appeared to show a kiss — sparking speculation about the nature of their relationship.

Neves took to social media to condemn the cover and clarify the situation: “Good afternoon. I always believe in the good in people. I’ve been warned not to, I’ve been deceived before, but I never wish bad on anyone. The person who chose to put this picture on the cover does not deserve to be happy.

“My wife, Debora, and I have been together for more than 11 years, happily, and we have a family I’m proud of. We’ve never been involved in any controversy. Since Diogo’s passing, we’ve done everything possible to support Rute and her family. The choice of this photo is as unhappy as the person who chose it.

“I respect that everyone has a job to do, but I don’t respect those who don’t respect others. I’m proud of my wife, of our family, and we’re proud of Rute for her strength. We’re here for her in whatever she needs. Thank you.”

Neves, now playing for Saudi Arabian side Al-Hilal, dated Debora for years before the couple married, and together they share three children.

In an emotional tribute, Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez recently confirmed that Neves will inherit Jota’s No. 21 shirt for the national team, keeping his friend’s memory alive on the pitch. Liverpool have also retired Jota’s No. 20 shirt as a mark of respect.
