Bengaluru Woman Dies After Being Set On Fire By Live-In Partner At Traffic Signal

A 35-year-old woman in Bengaluru, India, tragically died after being set on fire by her live-in partner in a horrifying public attack at a traffic intersection.

The incident, which took place in broad daylight, has shocked the community and sparked outrage across the region.

Victim Identified as Vanajakshi

The woman, identified as Vanajakshi, suffered severe burns after her partner, Vithal, allegedly chased down her car, doused her in petrol, and set her ablaze with a lighter. She later succumbed to her injuries in a hospital. Vanajakshi had reportedly sustained over 60% burn injuries.

A History of Abuse and Jealousy

Police say Vithal, a cab driver with a history of alcohol abuse and three failed marriages, had been in a live-in relationship with Vanajakshi for nearly four years. Vanajakshi, who had also been married twice before, had recently left Vithal due to his controlling behavior and addiction issues.

During her time away from him, she had grown close to Mariappa, a member of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, which allegedly enraged Vithal.

Brutal Attack in Public View

On the day of the incident, Vanajakshi was returning from a temple with Mariappa and a driver. Vithal reportedly followed them by vehicle and intercepted their car at a traffic signal. He then threw petrol into the vehicle, splashing all three occupants.

While Mariappa and the driver managed to escape with minor injuries, Vanajakshi was unable to flee. Witnesses say Vithal chased her down, poured more petrol on her, and ignited the flames using a lighter.

Passerby Tries to Save Her

A good Samaritan passing by bravely stepped in, using a cloth to put out the flames. He and others rushed Vanajakshi to a private hospital. The rescuer also sustained minor burns in the process.

Accused Arrested Within 24 Hours

Vithal, who also suffered burn injuries during the attack, was arrested within a day of the incident. He is currently in police custody.

Police Statement

“This tragic case stems from a complex and toxic relationship,” said Narayana M, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Electronic City Division. “Despite efforts to save her, the woman did not survive. We deeply appreciate the courage of the man who tried to help her. The accused has been arrested and strict legal action is being pursued.”

Authorities have confirmed that stringent sections of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked in the case, and an investigation is ongoing.
