Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson, known as King Charles’s trusted equerry, made a rare and striking public appearance with his new wife, Olivia Lewis, as the couple joined senior royals on the first day of Royal Ascot.

The newlyweds appeared relaxed and radiant as they mingled among high-profile guests, including Zara and Mike Tindall, marking their debut public outing as husband and wife following their high-society wedding in May.

Dashing Debut as Husband and Wife

Johnny, affectionately dubbed the “hot equerry” by royal watchers since 2018, looked the part in a classic dark morning suit, complemented by a white shirt, blue polka dot tie, and traditional top hat.

By his side, Olivia Lewis, a PR executive, turned heads in a vibrant red wrap dress adorned with a delicate white floral print. She completed her look with sparkling drop earrings and an elegant cream fascinator.

Inside the Wedding

According to The Mail on Sunday, the couple exchanged vows in a private ceremony at St Mary’s Church in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire, at the end of May. The wedding was followed by an intimate reception and luncheon hosted at Olivia’s parents’ home.

Their engagement was first announced in The Times in October 2024. The notice read: “The engagement is announced between Lieutenant Colonel Johnny Thompson, son of Mr and Mrs Alan Thompson of Morpeth, Northumberland, and Olivia Rose, daughter of Mr and Mrs Simon Lewis OBE of Primrose Hill, London.”

A Quiet Yet Loyal Presence

Though Johnny and Olivia tend to avoid the spotlight, they were previously seen together at Trooping the Colour in 2024. Johnny, who once served as the late Queen Elizabeth II’s most senior bodyguard, was promoted to super equerry in 2022 and has since taken on more behind-the-scenes responsibilities, overseeing the execution of King Charles’s daily schedule.

Despite a quieter role today, his rare Royal Ascot appearance—with new bride in tow—was a delightful moment for royal watchers and a clear nod to his ongoing place within the King’s trusted inner circle.
