Be Careful!!! Man Develops Skin Infection After Wearing Unwashed Thrifted Clothes

Health experts are reminding the public to always wash newly purchased clothing—especially second-hand items—after a TikTok user claimed he developed a viral skin infection from wearing thrifted clothes without cleaning them first.

The TikTok creator, who goes by the handle @onenevertwhoo_one, shared in a now-viral video that he contracted molluscum contagiosum, a common viral skin condition characterized by small, raised bumps. While the condition may appear concerning, it is generally considered harmless and often resolves without treatment, according to health sources cited by NeedToKnow.

The user attributed the infection to unwashed second-hand clothing, though molluscum contagiosum is typically transmitted through direct skin contact or, in some cases, through contaminated surfaces or textiles.

His experience aligns with advice from experts such as Frances Kozen, a senior lecturer in fiber science and apparel design at Cornell University.

Kozen told Self magazine that clothing—especially new or second-hand—may be treated with chemical finishes like fabric softeners, stain repellents, or anti-mildew agents, which can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions if not washed off.

The TikTok video has garnered millions of views and sparked thousands of comments, ranging from sympathy to disbelief. One user commented, “Hope you recover quickly!” while another asked, “Why didn’t you wash them first?”

Dr. Charles Puza, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, echoed similar advice in his own TikTok video, warning that unwashed garments—particularly from fast fashion retailers—can carry substances that may not be skin-safe. “They have things on them that you don’t want on your skin,” he said.

The incident serves as a reminder that washing clothes before wearing them isn’t just a matter of cleanliness—it can also help prevent potential skin issues.
