Amal Clooney May Face U.S. Entry Ban Over ICC Charges Against Netanyahu

British human rights lawyer Amal Clooney could be barred from entering the United States due to her role in the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to pursue war crimes charges against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

According to The Financial Times, the UK Foreign Office has alerted several senior barristers that they may face sanctions from the Trump administration for their involvement in the ICC’s legal proceedings.

The court issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant in November, sparking swift condemnation from former President Donald Trump.

In February, Trump signed an executive order imposing financial sanctions and visa restrictions on ICC officials and their immediate family members. Although ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan is the only person publicly named thus far, Clooney may be among the next targets.

Clooney, 47, served on a panel of legal experts who reviewed evidence related to the Gaza conflict and recommended charges. The panel concluded that the ICC had jurisdiction over the matter and that both Israeli and Hamas leaders should be held accountable for alleged violations of international law.

Should the sanctions extend to Clooney, she could be banned from entering the U.S., where she lives with her husband, actor George Clooney, and their twin children.

The ICC’s arrest warrants accuse Netanyahu and Gallant of intentionally depriving civilians in Gaza of essential resources, a violation of international humanitarian law.

The court also issued a warrant for Hamas military commander Mohammed Deif, who was allegedly responsible for the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel that killed 1,200 people and resulted in the abduction of more than 250. Deif was reportedly killed in an Israeli airstrike in July.

As signatories to the 1998 Rome Statute, 124 countries — including the UK, France, and Austria — are legally obligated to arrest individuals under ICC warrants if they enter their territory.

Neither the White House nor Clooney’s representatives have commented on the potential sanctions.
