Tragedy struck early Saturday morning when a fully-loaded truck, with registration number GGE 624 YJ, skidded off the Pencinena Bridge along Agege’s Old Abeokuta Road in Lagos.

The truck driver sustained severe injuries, including fractures to his limbs, due to the heavy impact of the crash. The vehicle landed atop two stationary painted commercial Volkswagen mini buses, commonly known as Korope. Fortunately, the buses were unoccupied at the time.

Eyewitnesses reported that the accident, which occurred around 6 a.m., drew the attention of residents and passers-by, causing significant disruption to vehicular movement for several hours.

Emergency responders, led by officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), swiftly arrived at the scene to rescue the injured and manage the situation.

According to LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki, preliminary investigations suggest that the driver lost control while navigating the bridge, leading the truck to plunge onto the buses parked below.

“The truck driver, who sustained serious fractures to both arms, was immediately extricated by LASTMA officers and handed over to personnel from the Elere Police Division,” Bakare-Oki stated. “He was later transported to the General Hospital in Ile-Epo for urgent medical treatment.”

To prevent further accidents and ensure the safety of other road users, LASTMA personnel quickly cordoned off the accident scene and diverted traffic. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Response Unit later cleared the wreckage, allowing normal traffic flow to resume.

Expressing deep concern over the incident, Bakare-Oki urged motorists — especially truck drivers — to exercise extreme caution, particularly with the onset of the rainy season. He emphasized the importance of adhering to road safety regulations and compliance with the newly mandated speed-limiting devices, introduced to reduce accidents and enhance public safety.
