19-Year-Old Girl Murders Parents Because They Wished Her "Happy Resurrection Day" On Easter

A 19-year-old woman has been charged with two counts of attempted second-degree murder after a family argument over religion escalated into a stabbing on Easter Sunday in Vancouver, Washington.

According to authorities, McKenzy Hafer allegedly attacked both of her parents with a knife following a series of heated exchanges sparked by a religious greeting. The incident occurred on April 20 inside the family’s home.

Police were called to the residence around 5:45 p.m., where they found McKenzy outside. Inside, both her mother and father were suffering from knife wounds. Her brother, Dakota, was present during the altercation but was not harmed, according to Law & Crime.

The dispute reportedly began earlier in the day when McKenzy’s father, Benjamin Hafer, greeted her with “Happy Resurrection Day.” She responded by saying she didn’t believe in God, which led to a tense exchange. McKenzy eventually repeated the phrase but went into another room to cool off.

Later, while McKenzy was in the kitchen, her mother, Erin Hetzler, confronted her about the earlier disagreement. The conversation turned into another argument, during which McKenzy reportedly slammed her phone on the ground.

As the situation escalated, Benjamin entered the kitchen to find out what was happening. According to a police report, McKenzy then grabbed a knife and stabbed her father in the abdomen with what she described to officers as “intent to kill.”

She allegedly then turned on her mother, slashing her throat with the same knife—again stating it was done with the intent to kill.

The arrest affidavit confirms the parents’ injuries were consistent with McKenzy’s account. Both victims were hospitalized and are expected to recover.

McKenzy Hafer is currently being held on $500,000 bail. Her arraignment is scheduled for May 5.
