Ukrainian President Rejects U.S. President-Linked Peace Deal That Recognizes Crimea As Russian

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has forcefully rejected a proposed peace plan backed by allies of U.S. President Donald Trump that would see Ukraine formally cede Crimea to Russia in exchange for freezing the current frontlines of the war.

The controversial proposal, reportedly part of a seven-point peace plan circulated by the United States, is set to be a key topic during high-level talks in London today involving officials from the UK, US, and EU.

Zelensky was unequivocal in his response.

“There is nothing to talk about,” he said. “This violates our Constitution. Crimea is our territory—the territory of the people of Ukraine.”

The plan, as reported by The Telegraph, includes no binding U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine and appears to reflect Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent private overtures—reportedly made during a meeting with Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff.

Under the plan, Russia would halt its offensive and withdraw claims to four partially occupied Ukrainian regions, but in return, Crimea would be internationally recognized as Russian territory—a concession Ukraine flatly refuses to make.

Zelensky warned that accepting such terms would only prolong the conflict.

“As soon as talks about Crimea and our sovereign territories begin, negotiations enter the format Russia wants—prolonging the war. Because it will be impossible to agree on everything quickly,” he said. “We know where these signals are coming from, and they will keep coming.”

The source of the proposal remains unclear, with speculation over whether it originated from U.S. officials or the Kremlin. European diplomats have voiced alarm over the plan, warning that any compromise on Crimea could embolden Putin and give him leverage in future negotiations.

“There is a lot of pressure on Kyiv right now to give up on things so Trump can claim victory,” one official told the Financial Times.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continue to resist daily Russian attacks, as cities like Kharkiv and Pokrovsk suffer relentless drone strikes and shelling.

Today’s meeting in London—initially planned for foreign ministers but downgraded after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio withdrew—will now feature General Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy on Ukraine and Russia, as the U.S. representative. UK Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that discussions will focus on the long-term prospects for a ceasefire, with the proposed peace plan expected to dominate the agenda.

Back in Moscow, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov downplayed hopes for a swift resolution, telling Russian state television: “It is not worth setting rigid deadlines or expecting a viable settlement in a short time.”
